You Already Filed Your Taxes. Then a 1099 Showed Up. Now What?

You did everything right.

You filed early. You got your refund. You moved on with your life.

Then a envelope showed up in your mailbox that you were not expecting — a 1099 form from Robinhood, a high-yield savings account, or a freelance gig you did last summer and completely forgot about.

Your first instinct? Throw it in the trash. “I already filed. The IRS won’t notice a few hundred bucks.”

That instinct will cost you money.

Why You Can’t Just Ignore a Late 1099

Here’s something most people don’t know: when a bank, brokerage, or app sends you a 1099, they simultaneously send an exact electronic copy directly to the IRS.

Their automated matching system — called the IRS Automated Underreporter Program — then cross-references every 1099 on file against every tax return submitted. It is not a person flipping through folders. It is software, running constantly, and it is very good at its job.

If your return doesn’t include income that the IRS already has a record of, their system flags it. A few months later, you get a CP2000 notice in the mail — a formal IRS letter stating that your return doesn’t match their records, and that you owe the difference, plus penalties and daily compounding interest.

What started as a few hundred dollars in unreported income can quietly snowball into a much larger bill.

Common Sources of Surprise 1099s

If you received a late tax document, you’re not alone. These are the most common culprits:

1099-DIV / 1099-B — Robinhood, Coinbase, Fidelity, or other brokerages Investment platforms often issue corrected or delayed 1099s well after the February deadline, especially if any of your holdings had reclassified dividends.

1099-INT — High-yield savings accounts With interest rates higher than they’ve been in years, savings accounts at banks like Marcus, Ally, or SoFi are generating more taxable interest income — and more 1099-INTs — than most people expect.

1099-NEC — Freelance or contract work Did a one-off project last year? Any client that paid you $600 or more is required to send a 1099-NEC. These sometimes arrive late or go to an old address.

1099-MISC — Rental income, prizes, or other miscellaneous income Even a referral bonus, a contest prize, or a cash reward from a credit card promotion can trigger a 1099.

The Fix: Form 1040-X, the Amended Tax Return

Do not panic. But do not wait.

The solution is straightforward: file an Amended Tax Return using Form 1040-X. This is a standard IRS form specifically designed for situations like yours — where something was missed, corrected, or changed after the original return was submitted.

Filing an amendment tells the IRS: “We see it. We’re fixing it.” That simple act of good faith is the difference between a manageable correction and an escalating IRS problem.

A few things to know about Form 1040-X:

  • You generally have 3 years from the original filing deadline to file an amended return
  • The IRS typically processes amendments within 8 to 16 weeks
  • Filing proactively, before the IRS contacts you, almost always results in lower or no penalties
  • If you owe additional tax, paying it quickly stops interest from accumulating further

The Worst Thing You Can Do Is Nothing

The IRS is not going to miss it. Their system is automated, thorough, and patient. The CP2000 letter will come — it just might take 12 to 18 months. By then, the original tax owed has grown with interest, and the situation feels far more stressful than it needed to be.

Fixing a missed 1099 now is almost always cheaper, faster, and easier than dealing with an IRS notice later.
