As the April 15th deadline approaches, many taxpayers who feel disorganized or overwhelmed decide to take the easy way out: “I’ll just have my accountant file an extension.”
Filing an extension (IRS Form 4868) is a perfectly legal and common strategy. It grants you six additional months (until October 15th) to get your messy receipts organized and submit your final paperwork.
But there is a massive trap hidden in this process that costs taxpayers millions of dollars in penalties every year.
An extension is an extension to FILE, not an extension to PAY.
The Reality of the April 15th Deadline
By federal law, any tax money you owe to the government is due on April 15th. Period.
If you owe the IRS money and you do not pay it by April 15th, the IRS will immediately begin charging you a Late Payment Penalty (0.5% of your unpaid taxes for every month you are late) plus daily compounding interest.
This happens even if you filed a valid extension.
The IRS expects you to estimate your tax bill and make a “good faith” payment by April 15th. If you just file the extension form and send no money, your debt will quietly grow every single day until October.
How to Avoid the Extension Trap
If you are missing K-1s from a business, waiting on complex investment documents, or simply don’t have time to finish your bookkeeping, you should get an extension. But you must do it the right way.
Here is the strategy Black Inc Tax Services uses to protect our clients:
- Upload What You Have: Send us all the documents you do currently have (W-2s, 1099s, basic expense summaries) through our Secure Client Portal or bring them in via our drop-off form.
- We Run an Estimate: Our tax experts will run the numbers based on what you provided and last year’s tax return.
- Make a Good Faith Payment: We will tell you exactly how much you need to send to the IRS by April 15th alongside your extension request.
By making that estimated payment on time, you secure your 6-month extension to find your missing paperwork—without triggering a single late payment penalty from the IRS.
Need an Extension? Act Now.
Do not wait until April 14th to ask for an extension. If we need to estimate your payment, we need a little bit of time to run the numbers.
Log into your client portal today, upload your available documents, and send us a message saying: “I need an extension, but here is what I have so far.” We will take care of the rest.
