You did everything right. You gathered your documents, filed your taxes early in January, got your refund, and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Tax season was over.
Then, you checked your mailbox in mid-March and found an envelope you weren’t expecting. Inside is a random 1099 form from a freelance gig, a stock brokerage like Robinhood, or a high-yield savings account you forgot about.
Your first instinct might be to throw it in the trash. You might think, “I already filed! It’s too late. The IRS won’t notice a few hundred dollars, right?”
That is the worst mistake you can make. Here is exactly what happens if you ignore a late tax form, and how the team at Black Inc Tax Services can help you fix it painlessly.
The IRS is Already Watching: The Automated Underreporter (AUR)
When a bank, app, or employer sends you a W-2 or 1099 in the mail, they don’t just send it to you. By law, they send an exact electronic copy directly to the IRS.
The IRS uses a computer system called the Automated Underreporter (AUR) program. This system automatically cross-references the income reported on your tax return against the electronic copies sent by your bank or employer.
If you ignore the late document, the computer system will catch the mismatch. Eventually, you will receive an IRS CP2000 Notice in the mail. This letter will demand the missing tax money, plus a “Failure to Pay” penalty, plus daily compounding interest dating back to April 15th.
The Simple Fix: Form 1040-X (Amended Return)
Do not panic, but do not ignore it. The fix is actually very simple, provided you act before the IRS sends you a bill.
We need to file an Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, also known as Form 1040-X. This form officially updates your original tax return to include the missing income.
It is always cheaper, faster, and less stressful to fix the mistake voluntarily than to wait for the IRS to catch it.
What You Need to Do Today
If you received a surprise tax form in the mail after Black Inc Tax Services already filed your return, follow these steps immediately:

- Upload the Document: Open your Black Inc Tax Services Secure Client Portal App.
- Notify Your Preparer: Snap a photo of the new document, upload it, and send us a quick message saying: “I got a late form!”
